Lanikai

Lanikai, like the Hawaiian beach they take their name from, mix the serene and the stormy, pulling together lush, sparkling alt-pop vibes and a swaggering 60s soul groove.

With one foot in the past and one in the present—one on the shore and one in the sea, they make beautiful and poignant pop music.

The band’s self-titled record features Sarbit penned tunes, blended with a number of close musical confidantes. It also features the production handy work and accompaniment from her musical partner in Imaginary Cities, Rusty Matyas, as well asThomas D’Arcy.

“I love to write and to make music, and these songs have been with me for a long time,” says Sarbit. “With Imaginary Cities, it was a great experience collaborating with Rusty (and actually, he helped me on a couple of songs for Lanikai), but this is the first time I really get to show the world my music in my own words. It’s scary, but exciting at the same time.”

Sarbit’s musical pedigree continues to impress, first as a member of Winnipeg soul cover band The Solutions, to the award-winning and internationally acclaimed Imaginary Cities – who reached an impressive musical buzz, immediately landing on Paste’s barometer, then the Polaris Music Prize short-list and lining up North American tour dates with The Pixies all on the back of their debut album, Temporary Resident. And, to her continuing credit, Lanikai’s debut is also power-packed with her stylistic songwriting, signature soaring vocals and features guest players from Sloan, The Sheepdogs and The Stills.

Despite the laundry list of special guests, Sarbit remains, as always, the leading star.
